Greenvolt unveils one of Poland’s largest battery storage facilities

The company also expects to invest approximately €800 million in Polish renewable energy assets by the end of 2026

Greenvolt Power has inaugurated one of Poland’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS), located in Turośń Kościelna, in the Podlaskie Voivodeship near Białystok. The new facility delivers 200 MW of power capacity and 800 MWh of storage capacity.

Connected to Poland’s national transmission network at 110 kV, the facility has been designed to improve the flexibility of the country’s electricity system by storing excess electricity when supply exceeds demand and releasing it back into the grid during periods of higher consumption.

From 2028, the Turośń Kościelna project will participate in Poland’s capacity market under a 17-year capacity contract, with a 170 MW capacity obligation, equivalent to 85% of the facility’s installed power.

The Turośń Kościelna installation consists of 196 containerised battery modules, 49 transformer stations, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery technology, esponse capability within seconds to system operator signals, and an expected operational lifetime exceeding 20 years.

The project occupies approximately 35,000 square metres, with more than 70% of the site preserved as biologically active land. Environmental and social assessments were carried out in accordance with standards established by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Expanding a multi-gigawatt storage portfolio

The Polish project forms part of Greenvolt Power’s rapidly expanding battery storage strategy across Central Europe. The company is currently finalising the Ełk battery storage project, which will match Turośń Kościelna’s capacity at 200 MW / 800 MWh and is scheduled to begin commercial operations during the fourth quarter of 2026.

Greenvolt is also developing the much larger Siedlce project, planned to deliver 600 MW and 2.4 GWh, making it the largest battery energy storage facility currently under development in Poland and among the largest in Europe.

Greenvolt Power’s diversified development portfolio now totals 12.8 GW, including onshore wind, solar and battery storage projects, with battery systems accounting for 5 GW. In Poland alone, the company had a development pipeline of 2,595 MW of battery energy storage projects, 657 MW of solar PV, and 238 MW of onshore wind.

Poland emerges as a strategic energy storage market

Battery storage has become one of the fastest-growing segments of Europe’s energy infrastructure as governments seek greater flexibility to support rapidly expanding renewable generation.

In the country’s main capacity auction for the 2028 delivery year, 33 battery energy storage projects secured contracts with a combined capacity obligation exceeding 1.7 GW. According to Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office, energy storage projects accounted for approximately 15% of all contracted capacity.
